Ulster Scots - Lambeg Drums 7

A tribute to the Brave Thirteen: This drum is known as Roaring Meg - The drum was made by William Moore and painted by William Magowan, this drum commemorates the 13 apprentices who closed the Ferry quay gate in the face of the Earl Of Antrim's Redshanks on 7th December (old style) 1688, at the start of the 'Siege of Derry'
This is an excellent painted drum with a lot of local history attached to the paintings. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into the drum - The top painting depicts the Mountjoy Breaking the Boom that blocked the Foyle. The main painting is 'Roaring Meg - The Defender of Ulster' a powerful cannon that overlooks the City Walls in Derry.
I use this image on my school PowerPoint's to explain the Apprentice Boy's of Derry and the Siege of Derry in 1688 - many school children simply do not know or have little idea of what happened in that era which is one of our most significant historical periods - shame!
