Loughries Burns Night Supper - 1

Loughries Ulster Scots hosted a traditional Burns Night Supper on Saturday 30th January 2010, in the Londonderry Room, Town Hall, Newtownards. Guest of honour for the evening was Mayor of Ards Councillor Montgomery and his wife Sally.

Over 90 guests packed in to the venue and were welcomed by Chairman of Loughries; Cllr Hamilton Gregory. The haggis was duly received carried by Amy Johnston, piped in by local piper Stephen Rodgers, with the traditional Burns address recited by Mr. Wilbert Magill. Mayor of Ards Cllr Montgomery duly proposed a toast to the Lassies, after which the evening meal was served.

Following the meal, Mr. Wilbert Magill recited a few poems from his popular book of poems and memories ‘Aboot tha Airds’, The guests settled down to an evening of wonderful music, this year provided by the brilliant Broken String Band, who entertained the crowd with their repertoire of traditional Ulster Scots / Blue Grass and Cajun music.

The guest’s showed great generosity as over £300.00 was collected for the Mayor’s Charity for 2010 Cancer Research and Loughries Historical Society Charity the Renal Unit at the Ulster Hospital.
