Cross Community Event - Downpatrick

Today Thursday, as part of a number of events I have been asked to assist at was a cross-community schools event in Co. Down.

At St Mary's High School Downpatick two schools St Mary's and Knockbreda High School came together to continue their cross-community schools project. The two schools had previously visited the Belfast Murals exploring them together.

Today the children looked at cultural diversity through drama, music and other workshops aimed at developing a closer understanding of cultural diversity.

I was pleased to meet with Cathal Murphy (music teacher at St. Mary's) we took 4 x workshops looking at various aspects of Irish and Ulster Scots cultural music. Our 4 x 40 minute workshops went very, very well indeed with the children taking a great interest.

Many of the children took the opportunity to play the various musical instruments we used today, and as usual the lambeg drum was very popular........ I wonder why??

Two excellent school engaged positively in a very worthwhile project - well done both schools.

This is the first of many of these events that I have been asked to do and I look forward to each one!!
