Ulster Covenant - Centenary 2012 Part 1

In order to mark the Centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant on 28th September 2012, Loughries Historical Society are planning to host a special event.

Venue will be the Londonderry Room, Town Hall, Newtownards - the building where the Ulster Covenant was signed back in September 1912. Key note speaker will be special invited guest Drew Nelson, Grand Secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland with Jack Greenald local historian providing some historical facts. A 4 course meal will be provided with stirring music from Lord Londonderry's Own C.L.B. Band - with Piper Stephen Rodgers, they might even be a bit of fife and drumming!!

Loughries through our Council Representatives, have initiated a request to Ards Borough Council suggesting that they, (Ards Council) mount a commemorative plaque in the Town Hall N'Ards, to mark this vitally important and highly significant event in Ulster history.

Weight Loss at Weight-Watchers 2012

I have not posted, until now, my visit to Bangor Weightwatchers class, held each Wednesday 4.45-5.45pm

I did blog last year quite regularly on my visits to slimming world - yes it worked very well and I lost over 35lbs, sadly quite a bit of that went back on in the intervening 12 months.

That said, I am determined not to undo the work and pain I have endured in the last 5 weeks, loosing weight - whilst doing without my favourite food.

Quick synopsis - since January 1st I have had no salt, sugar, crisps, nuts, cheese, wine, chips, Chinese food, chocolate, sweets.............................. but with psychotherapy and a little councilling I am coping well.

So in the last 4 weeks I have lost 24lbs - so with weigh in tomorrow Wednesday, I might make the 28lbs (2 stone) another 14 lbs to go.

Wish me luck!!

Folk Song - Ellan Vannin

This version is sung by Robin Gibb, himself a native of The Isle of Man. The song tells the story of a boat - the Ellan Vannin, that sank in the Irish Sea on the 3rd December 1909, en-route from the Isle of Man to Liverpool.

The song is sometimes referred to as 'the unofficial National Anthem of the Isle of Man'

Sadly, we live only a short distance from the Isle of Man - here on the east coast of N.Ireland and yes, I have never visited.

Scotland seems to draw me!!

Gunrunning 1912 - The Clyde Valley and The Mountjoy II

One of the most interesting books that I read recently was Fred Crawford - Carson's Gunrunner, by Author Keith Haines.

Mystery surrounds Major Crawford, he is described as 'The Shadowy figure with Anonymous Face' to others he was best known as 'The Unacceptable gun-running face of Unionism'

With the backdrop of the Home Rule crisis and the possibilities of WWI on the horizon, these were very troubled and difficult times in Ulster. Many, many men, worked tirelessly for the Unionist Cause - hero's were to emerge Sir Edward Carson - Lord Craigavon and others, but who was Major Fred Crawford?

In this pivotal year 2012 - Centenary of the Signing of the Ulster Covenant, I would urge everyone interested in Local Ulster History, around the 1900 to 1925, to purchase a copy of this book - you won't be disappointed!

From a Lambeg Drumming perspective there is a drum with Major Crawford's portrait painted on it, (which I don't have) also the Clyde Valley (the boat that brought the GUNS into both Larne and Bangor Harbour - also known as The Mountjoy II) - Bobby Magreechan recently purchased a new lambeg drum and named it 'The Mountjoy II - Bangor.

The Clyde Valley was famed for delivering the UVF guns into Larne and Bangor Harbour - but history will tell us that the boat was renamed The Mountjoy II for this adventure!!

Through The Years - Lambeg Drums in Ards 1

Newtownards Co. Down, would not be the 'hotbed' of Lambeg Drumming in Ulster, that said there has been a Lambeg Drumming tradition for many generations.

Most Orange Lodges at one time took lambeg drums on the 'Twelfth Day' however as the years passed, bands of one description or another comes along, pipe bands, brass bands, accordion bands and flute bands which inevitably pushed the drums out.

Now this is story could be true of most towns and villages, nevertheless there are those who keep the tradition alive - one such Orange Lodge is Rising Sons Of William LOL 240, now only 2 drums remain in the North Down 12th.

Ulster Scots - Burns Week

For century's the connection between Scotland and Ulster has been fantastic and for mutual benefit of course. Financial, Musical, Religion, Agricultural, Fishing, Education, Crafts, Dance.............. you get my drift; I could go on and on!

Not to bore you all with 'things' that are all around us in Ulster Scots Connection - here are two very small items - but fun items, that I noticed today whilst out shopping. There were many more examples but I pick these two out.

1/ Burns week lies ahead, so local firm Mash Direct, produced the traditional Neeps & Tatties, which is essential at any Burns Night Celebrations.

2/ It’s a little more of a ‘sweet connection’ Iron Bru – the national soft beverage from Scotland, Iron Bru Lollies - I bought 3 today: one each for the children in my house, Matthew, Christopher and of course the biggest wean of all – Yes Me!!

Identity - Who do they think they are!!

Northern Irish?

Who you are and the label you choose for yourself - in this part of the world, is hugely important and can be as divisive as it is multi-dimensional.

If you live in Northern Ireland you can be many things - a British Citizen, an Irish Citizen, an Ulster-man, an Ulster Scot, a European....... but now you can be Northern Irish!

I was shopping in Sainsbury's today and bought a pint of milk (pictured above) - it has not been lost on me that the name used Northern Irish, together with the colours of the pie chart (green, white and gold/orange)

Flags, colours and identity are important in Ulster - but Northern Irish is pure tripe and absolute folly!!

Any thoughts?

Family History Trail - 2012 1

For several years now I have been 'futtering aboot' with my family history - so in 2012 I have decided to really give it a go, using a lot of my spare time to explore my family history and other locally based stories.

I have found a few very sad tales - not too many happy stories yet (I have been looking for the skeletons first mind you!) that said I look forward to tracing what is out there.

I very much believe that - to use a term, toss the cards and let them fall where they may!

Here goes, so tune in every now and again for a story or two!

Burns Night Supper

Later this month I will be attending a traditional Burns Night Supper at Lisneal College, Londonderry - on Friday 27th January 2012. I think I am right in saying that this is the schools first attempt of hosting an 'Ulster Scots' event within the school.

Through the Ulster Scots peripatetic music project I have been working in the Lisneal for just over a year and this event proves the manifestation of this work, where staff begin to develop their own projects and ideas to compliment this work in schools.

If you are available why not book your seat - Ring Mr. Darren Gibson at the school.

Some of the pupils that I have been tutoring will be performing a short piece during the evening - I may even fife a wee tune or two myself !!

Loughries True Blues LOL 1948 - Fallen Hero from WWI

Those of you who have been following my blog over the past 2 years, will note that the majority of the items that I post are to do with local history, Ulster Scots items, my work, lambeg drumming items, a little on my family and a little on the Orange and Black Institutions, etc. - well here is an Orange Lodge based item.

During another visit to the newspaper library in Belfast I uncovered this news item. Now I was aware of the story from a WWI presentation that Jack Greenald gave to Loughries Historical Society a couple of years ago.

To add a personal interest to the story - I am the Secretary of Loughries True Blues LOL 1948, so it is somewhat interesting to me that a century ago, the Secretary of Loughries served his King and Country - he sadly died at the Somme!

Robert Lowry was a man of his time - he like many signed the Ulster Covenant, then joined the Ulster Volunteer Force (Carson's Army) prepared to fight against Home Rule, then a twist of fate and they are all off to Europe to fight a war not of their making! There are so many stories of this nature that lie forgotten, lost over time, but it is important to remember those who have gone before - hope you enjoyed this story, sad of course.

Great to see some of 'Our History' beginning to be told! A simple table with a huge historical significance attached to it.

I picked this article up from Yahoo News - something I don't normally read, however this story caught my eye, so I felt it was worth Bloggin about.

This year 2012, sees the Centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant - I intend to blog a number of items on this very important period in Ulster History. My friend, colleague and local historian Jack Greenald - will supply me with some of the information.

Keep looking in to the blog as Loughries Historical Society and my Orange Lodge - Loughries True Blues LOL 1948, will have a lot to celebrate this year. We have organised a number of events to highlight 'Orangemen who died on the Titanic, the Signing of the Ulster Covenant and a New Banner relating to items of historical significance around 100 years ago, beginning Lord Carson.

A rather basic table is set to take centre stage at Belfast City Hall as the building marks the centenary of one of its most significant events.

This year will see the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant - the famous Unionist protest against efforts to introduce Home Rule in Ireland. Unionist leader Sir Edward Carson was the first to sign the petition and almost half a million people followed him.

The wooden table upon which the renowned barrister and firebrand politician leant as he inked the document inside City Hall will be one of the most viewed pieces of furniture in the building this year.

But for all its historic significance, City Hall tour guide Dianne Leeman concedes it is not the prettiest table in the world.

"The Covenant table was used by all the dignitaries - Lord Carson and the dignitaries - to sign on," she said.

"It was very late in the day they discovered they hadn't got a large enough centre piece for this use and it was made quickly and roughly by craftsmen from the ship yard specifically for the signing.

"There are lots of myths about it - stories went about around the city that it was lost in City Hall and found in that awful condition but it always looked like that, it was made so quickly and roughly. At the time of the signing they draped it with a huge Union flag and the purpose really was to camouflage the table and make it look better."

The table now sits at the back of the main council chamber.

While interest in the table will peak in the autumn, Mrs Leeman revealed that an important guest has already asked to see it.

"The Taoiseach visited City Hall on November 29 and that was one of the particular artefacts in the building he specifically asked to see and he had a great knowledge of the event," she said.

Old Years Night

Firstly - Happy New Year Folks!!

Reading many articles about this tune, would lead you to believe that it is purely an Irish Traditional tune - well like many a good tune it is well travelled and sung and played by many, many famous and not so famous musicians.

I tend to like the story that it IS a traditional Scottish tune and once more popular than Auld Lang syne!

In my opinion - if you play or sing a tune or song give it its true meaning and recognition, it is only professional courtesy!!

So at midnight tonight what ever your tipple - may joy be with you all !!

With luck and good will, a short play about the harvest fair will be performed by a school in Newtownards - incorporated in an Ulster Scots Concert night around March time.

A Chronicle of Comber

Friday 16th December I attended a book launch at the Thomas Andrews Memorial Hall Comber, where over 180 people attended the launch, on what turned out to be a very enjoyable and interesting evening.

I was invited by one of the books co-authors Laura Spence.

I would highly recommend the publication to all my friends and filmily.

I don't have much of a connection with Comber, nevertheless all those interested in local history and particularly Comber, will thoroughly enjoy the book.

Congratulations to Laura and her friend Desmond Rainey for an excellent evening and thanks for signing a couple of copies- one for me and the other one for the Low Country Exile in Londonderry!

Bloggin - 2 years on!

Since I took the plunge 'bloggin' on 16th December 2009, I have placed 543 items on my blog - some may be of interest, some may not be, however it has been a great experience.

I have accumulated 20,550 individual hits - an amazing total for me, I did not think anything that I posted would be of interest to the wider public. It pleases me that throughout the past 2 years I have received communications from all around the world, made 'friends' with the unlikeliest people, annoyed a few (intentionally) and entertained others!

So here is to another 2 years of Bloggin!

Family History Trail - William Anderson.

For a number of years I have been researching my Family Tree, I have collated quite a bit of information from living relatives, and bit n pieces from local newspapers etc. I have to say that not all information I have been given has been true - I have found out some very, very sad stories and of course they have not been told to me 'as it was' more conjecture, folklore and misleading stories.

Anyone who knows me well, will testify that I am determined to get to where I want to go, using all avenues that will lead me to 'the truth' - here is one example!

In November I blogged about gate crashing / going to a book launch at the Somme Centre at Conlig, near Newtownards on Remembrance Day 2011. The books Remembering Their Sacrifice of the Great War - The Ards & North Down by Barry Niblock - I bought 2 x copies of each, 1 set for me and 1 set for my good friend Jack Greenald.

I have read through extensively but found no reference to William Anderson, my Great Uncle, so I decided to contact the Mr. Niblock to see if he had any information on William Anderson.Within 24 hours Barry e-mailed me back with a holding e-mail then a week or so later he forwarded me some exciting and emotional news!

Here is part of the e-mail regarding Uncle William :-

Born in Ballymacarrett, Belfast, William Anderson enlisted on 17 September 1914 in Newtownards.

He was a mechanic, 5 feet 8 inches tall and he was aged 19 years 10 months.

He was posted to 'B' Company, 13th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles (No. 17148). On 22nd December 1914 he was transferred to the Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Artillery (No. 32504).

He went to France on 8 February 1915.

On 1 December 1915 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.

He was hospitalised in July 1917 due to the effects of gas poisoning.

He was later discharged from the army on 10 February 1919 on a pension of 11 shillings per week.

At that time his next-of-kin was his aunt, Jane Anderson, who lived at 157 Greenwell Street, Newtownards.

He was single when he was discharged and some time later he got married.

In January 1926 his widow applied to the military authorities for financial assistance.

So it may be assumed that William died around December 1925/early January 1926.

Well I was totally surprised and a little shocked - I am very grateful to Barry Niblock for his prompt response and wonderful information! However I don't like where this is taking me - I have the feeling there is going to be a very sad story at the end of this trail!

Visit to Belfast Newspaper Library - 2

I will share with you another snippet from the archives from the Newtownards Chronicle form 1917 during my visit to the Newspaper Library during the week.

A few weeks ago I blogged about planting an Echlinville Apple Tree in my back garden, here is a connection.

My good friend Mark Thompson blogged this on 'Bloggin fae the Burn' article entitled Scottish Bishops and Ulster-Scots apples. The article explores Robert Echlin from Fife, Scotland who settled in these shores from Pittadro in Fife and became Bishop of Down & Connor - later a brand of cooking apples were named Echlinville.

Billy Connolly was asked during a BBC interview who was the greatest living Scots man? Billy replied Sean Connery - Billy explained, Sean had the ability to walk into a room full of people - women went weak at the knees, and of course men went weak at the knees also!

Well my favourite Bond movie is Dr. No and every time I watch this scene I go weak at the knees - for me an iconic moment in movie history!

Visit to Belfast Newspaper Library.

Back on my family history trail again!

I visited the Newspaper Library in Belfast and viewed the Newtownards Chronicle Jan 1917 to December 1917. Looking through the year the news was dominated with news from the Western Front and associated stories - church, community groups, Orange Lodges, Council - all collecting, sweets, chocolate, knitted gloves, socks, underwear etc.

The other big news item running throughout the year was the Home Rule Crisis - Lord Carson taking the fight to the Westminster Parliament, and arguing the Ulster cause against increasing English hostility!

I was looking for information on my Great Uncle William Anderson, who I believed died during the great war - wrong! Having looked through the paper I did come across a letter that he had sent to the Chronicle thanking the good folk of Newtownards for sending him a 'parcel of comforts'

It is truly amazing what can be found - if you have the patients of course.

So guess what, William Anderson to my surprise survived the war - see next blog post regarding the information!

Ecklinville - Ulster Scots Cooking Apple

Thanks to two local folk the Ecklinville Cooking Apples are once again growing in Co. Down – with two other trees near Londonderry.

Research carried out by Mr. Mark Thompson identified the Ecklinville cooking apples arriving into Co. Down, in particular Ards Peninsula – over 400 years ago. More information can be found at Mark’s Blog – Blogging Fae the Burn and Darren Gibson’s Blog – Fae the Han o a Low Country Lad.

Today, we planted our Ecklinville apple tree in the back garden in North Down – Matthew, Christopher and Dudley gave me a hand.

I look forward to the first crop of apples – I can’t wait for an Ulster Scots apple tart / apple crumble!

Ulster Snack

Those of my blog followers who are unsure what a traditional Ulster snack is - well here a couple of the essential ingredients.

1 Veda thickly sliced (door stoppers) spread with some butter or margarine topped with a thick slice of Ulster mature cheese, touch of pepper.

I cup of tea and a packet of Ulsters finest crisps - Tayto Cheese & Onion flavour.

You don't need to have too much culinary talent - just strong chewing jaws!!

I am off for a few slices now.

This afternoon, Friday 11th November 2011 (Armistice Day) I attended a rather special book/s launch - at the Somme Heritage Centre, White-spots, Conlig, N’Ards.

I did not receive an official invitation, I kind of gate crashed the event, however I did call with the Somme Centre who agreed that I could slip in at the back of the event.

The great and the good were there - both Local PM's, both Local Mayor's, a host of MLA'S and Councillors from both Council areas.

The book/s Remembering Their Sacrifice in the Great War – The War Dead of North Down and Ards, Compiled by Barry Niblock.

I am looking forward to browsing through both volumes over the coming weeks.

You never know who you meet at these events are they are usually great social / community gatherings – the first man I met was the great Willie Cromie!

Reliable Funding

As a community activist, I help to apply for financial assistance for various projects, for Loughries Historical Society - an Ulster Scots Group from Newtownards, Co. Down.

Time after time I get bogged down with repetitive form filling, unnecessary complicated forms that take too much time! I understand fully the need for application forms, that of course is part of the funding process, however some of the forms that I regularly fill in are designed by people who know absolutely nothing about the needs and limitations of community groups.

Thankfully in Ards Borough Council - who do have a grasp of community based groups and their needs - provide simple, concise and uncluttered application forms and a fully motivated staff who help and assist at every call.

Loughries applied for their Festival Funding on April 30th 2011 as per their guidelines - festival held in October as planned, end of grant forms completed with invoices and report attached - Grant paid into account with in 3 working days.

How is that for efficiency!

I was unable to make Church (Greenwell Presbyterian Church Newtownards) this morning, however I went along this evening.

It was a wonderful service - as always, but I left the Church this evening really uplifted as this was the final hymn - 'It is well with my Soul'.

Lambeg Drums in Portavogie

I was clearing some space on my laptop today and came across this photograph from around 2005.

The photo was taken at Eric Cully's house in Portavogie Co. Down - in July, on the run up to the 12th. We spend almost 2 weeks preparing drums for fife & drumming nights, the 11th Night under the arch in N'Ards, then of course the big day - the Twelfth Day itself.

Here we paused from 'pullin the drums' for a tune!

In the middle of the drum ring with the fife is, Dr. Diane Harvey-Smith, lead fifer and prominent female lambeg drummer in the Ards area.

The faces may have gotten a little older, but the enthusiasm for the fife and lambeg drumming tradition is strong as ever.

The other folks in the photo bottom left to right are: Ian Lawther, Brian McClurg, Dean Rainey, Stephen Gordon, Harold Gordon, Harry Gordon, Mark Anderson (me) and Eric Cully.

The hospitality and friendship we receive from Eric and Jean Cully is just wonderful - great Ulster Scots folk, in the heart of Co. Down........... it would be great to get together again.... sometime perhaps!

Lambeg Drums - A Selection of Painted Shells 20

I haven't blogged with pictures of lambeg drums for a while, so here is a selection for you to view.

I have picked plain shells with a simple ribbon / banner on the drum, usually identifying where the drum comes from, or simply the name of the drum.

There are many hundreds of these drums around Ulster that don't always get the recognition of a well painted shell, however a lot of the competition drummers don't really care much what it looks like, as long as the drum sounds great - that is all they are interested in.

I tend to be the opposite - I enjoy the 'cultural art' aspect of the lambeg drum tradition, as I have said before the lambed drum musical tradition is more than music or noise, it tells the story of us Ulster folk, who we are, our town-lands, families, famous people we idol, historical buildings, great ships, animals, the list is endless, so perhaps a simple ribbon with a name says enough about a drum and more often that not the drum owner!

Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula is a wonderful place!

Well, I am very proud of the fact that I was born in the 'Front Deed' (Wallace's Street N01) in the Movilla end of the town. My father was Blakely Anderson and a lifelong friend of Wilbert Magill.

Wilbert is a fine man and of great character, a writer & musician of note and one time local Politician and Mayor of Ards.

Wilbert has attended a number of events hosted by Loughries - he visited our Ulster Scots summer school, reading local poetry from his book Aboot Tha Airds, we also were blessed by his attendance at a couple of our Burns Night Suppers where Wilbert addressed the haggis in a wonderfully theatrically way. He also graced our guests with a number his poems. I recall having to wipe away tears of laughter as Wilbert had me and the audience in roars of laughter and of course we were in the grasp of his Wilbert’s hand – what a fine exponent of the Ulster Scots Tongue!

It is my understanding that Wilbert is unwell at present – I wish him well on his road to recovery.

It makes me intensely proud to know 3 great local Ulster Scots Speakers Wilbert Magill, Willie Cromie and of course Willie McAvoy!

Fife & Lambeg Drum in Ulster Schools

Earlier this year I was contacted by Miss Jenny Hill - a student teacher at Strandmillis Teacher Training in Belfast. Jenny was working on her college dissertation, her chosen subject being The Fife and Lambeg Drum Tradition in Northern Ireland.

Jenny travelled around Ulster visiting schools that I was working in, whilst there Jenny carried out her own research, speaking with teachers, pupils, as well as noting my working practice and exploring my thoughts on the fife and lambeg drum musical tradition as well as my view on the Ulster Scots Culture.

Jenny promised me a look at her dissertation, after it had been submitted for marking and evaluation, thankfully Jenny honoured her promise and allowed me to view her work.

The dissertation was well written and meticulously researched - Jenny has encapsulated the tradition and developed an understanding of where this musical tradition fits within the overall patchwork quilt - that is Ulster Culture. I was fortunate to read the article in its entirety and pleased at with the final product, so congratulations to Jenny on an excellent project.

Jenny has started work in a Primary School in East Antrim.

Loughries - Broken String Band

Loughries - The Broken String Band were in great form last Friday at our musical night - there was a great appreciative crowd at the Town Hall, Newtownards for one of the top traditional stringed bands from Ulster - not a bodhran in sight!!

Rather than give a full report, I thought I would let the pictures tell the story of the night!!

Loughries would like to acknowledge the help, support and guidance of the Community Development / Community Relations office at Ards Borough Council during the planning of the Ulster Scots Festival.

Loughries are also pleased to announce that £280.00 was collected / donated to Loughries during the Festival Events for our 2 x chosen charities for 2011 - N.Ireland Children’s Hospice and Diabetes UK, presentations to both charities will follow later this year.

Wee Geordie

Geordie McAdam is a wonderful musician, accomplished fisherman and all round entertainer.

I had the very good fortune to meet George around 12 years ago, as we both had developed a keen interest in the fife.

George has been a life long musician, firstly a flute player, then as we all know him to be one of Ulster's finest fiddle players. He prefers bluegrass / Hillbilly music, sprinkled with a touch of Scottish and Ulster Scots tunes.

Despite his best efforts, George won't make a lambeg drummer - although he does keep good time, but he is an accomplished fifer and I am always pleased to either fife along with George or indeed drum along to his fifing.

Newtownards Welcomes home - 1st Battalion Irish Guards

This morning Saturday 8th October, I spent an hour or so in my hometown of Newtownards.

The 1st Battalion of the Irish Guards were given a civic reception by the Mayor of Ards and his fellow Councillors. Huge crowds turned out for Parade and Church Service - The Service was held at St. Marks Church of Ireland, then followed the parade and march pass by the flute, pipes and drums of the Battalion Band and Officers and Men of the Irish Guards. The Mayor of Ards and the Lord Lieutenant of Co. Down took the salute.

It is wonderful to live in a democracy where - what the majority of the community wants happens, where all the citizens of the Borough of Ards can pay respect to 'Our Troops' as they return from active service serving Her Majesty's Armed Forces.

Northern Ireland Football International

Friday 7th October 2011 - kick-off 7.45pm.

Not often I get the opportunity to attend a Northern Ireland International Football Match, however tonight I was given 2 x tickets to the game. It is always vitally important to support your National team at any sport, so tonight I look forward to supporting Northern Ireland Football Team.

Only one problem - 2 tickets and I have 2 children, both want to go one will miss out sadly!

Bangor Methodist Breakfast Club

On Saturday morning I have been invited to speak at the Bangor Methodist Breakfast Club. I have spent a few hours preparing a powerpoint and talk on Ulster Scots, Orange Order and my Job!

I intend to take one of my lambeg drums, a fife and a box full of Ulster Scots booklets, pamphlets and information sheets.

Eric Morrison - who talked me into doing this, informs me that the group knows nothing about the Ulster Scots tradition / culture......... lets see how it goes!

Newtownards and District Boys Brigade (BB) on parade.

On Sunday 2nd October 2011 the Newtownards and District Boys Brigade held their annual parade and Church service through Newtownards to 1st N'Ards Presbyterian Church.

There was a huge turn out of all the local BB's including my own boys who are members of 3rd Ards BB in Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church.

I was a member of Greenwell Street BB for many years - it is a wonderful organisation and something I as an adult and a parent would highly recommend to all boys of school age.

"Three Cheers for the Derrys!"

Darren Gibson (Lisneal College) made me aware of a book that was re-released recently 'Three Cheers for the Derrys' - a history of the 10th Royal Inniskillen Fusiliers in the 1914-1918 War, based on recollections of the final veterans.

It so happened, that the author was Mr. Gardiner S. Mitchell, a friend and colleague of Darren's. I gave Darren £20.00 to buy the book, which is on sale at all good book stores for £16.90 - an interesting number!

At Loughries bus trip on Saturday, Darren drove down from L'Derry for the trip and handed me a copy of the book, and £20.00 back! The author have sent me a signed complimentary copy with personal message written on the inside cover - great!

I am really looking forward to the read, I have 1 more book in the queue before I settle down in the coming cold winter nights to enjoy this book.

So thanks to Gardiner and Darren for their acts of kindness and benevolence.

I will be doing a number of talks and presentations in the coming weeks - so I will take the opportunity to promote this wonderful book 'Three Cheers for the Derrys'

Loughries Bus Trip - Ards Peninsula

Part 1 Loughries Ulster Scots Mini Festival - funded by Ards Borough Council.

On Saturday 1st October 2011, Loughries Ulster Scots 'A Forenoon Doon the Upper Ards' trip took place as planned - it was very, very, wet all morning!

A full bus of 31 hearty folk including our bus driver (Dessie) and tour guide (Mark) braved the appalling weather. We met as planned, at Conway Square Newtownards 0900 am and made our way down the Peninsula.

First stop was Kircubbin - to the green where Rev. Archibald Warwick was hanged for his part in the 1798 rebellion. We moved on to Ardquin Abbacy - an old ruin where King James I visited to authorise a land deal with local land owners including James Hamilton & Hugh Montgomery. It was then onto Portaferry Castle.

Following light refreshments at Portaferry Hotel we moved on to Newcastle - a townland outside Cloughey, where Sir Thomas Smith landed at a small harbour in August 1572 - then onto Kirkistown Castle.

We made 3 x stops - Portaferry - Newcastle - Kirkistown and visited three very important historical sites. Sadly the rain lashed down all morning and most if not all the folks were soaked at least once, some twice and a few 3 times!

Our tour guide Mr. Mark Thompson entertained us with many, many fascinating facts and stories from the local area, including some of the characters involved. Also were treated to some authentic Ulster Scots poems and songs – Brilliant!

I can say that the weather however how bad did not dampen our spirits or resolve, it was a great adventure and was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Ulster-Scots 'A Forenoon Aroon the Ards' Part 3

Well Saturday 1st October 2011 is upon us, so it is time for our "A Forenoon Doon the Upper Ards" bus trip.

The bus has been fully booked, I could have filled 2 buses but lets not get carried away!!

We are very fortunate that Mr. Mark Thompson will act as tour guide for the trip. Mark designed and prepared this leaflet for the trip, so each person will receive this leaflet and a copy of the Thomas Smith booklet I blogged about before.

Ulster Covenant - 99th Anniversary.

Today, Wednesday 28th September 2011, is the 99th Anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant. Hundreds of thousands of Ulster men throughout the world signed the covenant in support of strengthening and maintaining the Union.

The next 10 years witnessed a series of events that was to change the face of Ulster forever.

Sadly, today I was in a school, which I shall not name - I asked all students aged between 13 + 15 what historical event happened today, the 28th September in Ulster? Of the 30 or so children I asked none / nil / zero - knew what anniversary was today. When I explained the Ulster Covenant to them again sadly, only 2 of the 30 children have vaguely heard of the Ulster Covenant.

Dear oh dear oh dear!!

Another reason why our schools are failing our Protestant children. We need Ulster history taught in our school system........ urgently!

I am not sure how many memorial lambeg drums, dedicated to the memory of Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) Officers are in existence, however here are three drums that I have photo's of.

They are taken from the booklet 'The Ulster Drum' published by the Ulster Scots Agency - with photographs supplied by Mr. Bobby Magreechan - with my quiet assistance in the background!

Congratulations to the families of these men, who had the courage to have their portraits painted on the front of their Lambeg Drums in loving memory.

Ulster-Scots 'A Forenoon Aroon the Ards' Part 3

This afternoon Friday, I drove the proposed route of the upcoming trip around the lower / upper Ards - It was very enjoyable and interesting.

We plan to leave Newtownards at 0900 on Saturday 1st October 2011 for Conway Square, driving to Kircubbin - Portaferry - Quinten Bay - Cloughy - Portavogie - Ballyhalbert - Balligan - Ballywalter - Millisle - Newtownards - return for around 1pm.

We have a number of stops planned - we intend to concentrate on 1572 Sir Thomas Smith items of interest - 1606 Hamilton / Montgomery matters and some Rebellious 1798 stuff thrown in.

Mark Thompson will act as our Tour Guide for the trip and we are all looking forward to an enjoyable morning.

Yes, I booked the Portaferry Hotel for tea, coffee, scones with butter, cream and jam!!

If you want to travel - sorry you are too late - all seats booked / SOLD OUT!

Ulster Scots Language - The Ards 2

I intend to do two blog posts with a similar theme 'Burns Night Suppers' here is the first.

In the last 6 years, we at Loughries have hosted a number of Burns Night Suppers - in the Town Hall, Newtownards. They have become so successful, that we have had to limit numbers of guests. The first year we had around 100 guests, earlier this year we reduced the numbers to around 86, really to assist the caters.

Each year we invited guests, Mayors, MPs MLA's really to promote primarily the great work being done by Loughries Historical Society!

Again we such a richness of talent that we able to call upon different groups, acts and performers to make the event something special.

Here is a snippet of the burns supper 3 years ago - addressing the haggis is none other than Willie McAvoy half of the double act 'The Twa Wullies'. Willie McAvoy addressed the haggis with great poise - in a poetic & dramatic way - the guests almost lifted off the roof with a loud cheer as he tore open the haggis with his ceremonial knife. Later in the evening the Twa Wullies entertained us with some local Ulster Scots poems & yarns told as these stories are meant to be told in their native tongue. I remember the tears of laughter streaming down many faces of the audience as the stories rolled out - fantastic!

Once again as I reflect on 6 years work at Loughries, it is easy to have a great night - when you have a richness of great, talented folk, again I emphasise - high quality authentic Ulster Scots material, should they be musicians, dancers or in this case in question Natural Ulster Scots Speakers.

Ulster Scots Language - The Ards

I have been looking through some of Loughries Historical events, since our formation back in September 2005 and came across this photo (see below).

In the early days we (Loughries) decided to go back in time to the beginning of the local Ulster Scots story - in the 'Great Ardes' - known as the Hamilton / Montgomery Settlement of 1606, or known locally as 'The Dawn of the Ulster Scots'

As with all local history, the more you explore the more you want to know and this has been true for Loughries and me personally. With the help of local knowledgeable folk - like the gentlemen in the photo below, we have developed a better understanding of who we are and where we came from. We have developed a better understanding of the way we talk, how we play our music and well do all the things we do - in every day life.

Again in the early day's of Loughries Historical Society, Michael McCullough (Director at Ulster Scots Agency) had a vision for Ulster Scots Summer Schools, we at Loughries planned and developed the summer school that Michael had envisaged - music & dance, local history, language, arts & crafts, football, cookery - all rolled into a fun week for the children. Now 5 years later Michael's dream is still going, Loughries is one of the premier Ulster Scots Summer Schools in Ulster.

To have a successful summer school, or any Ulster Scots event, you need help from local experts, no fake or as we say in Ards no impostors welcome! In Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula we have the real deal, fantastic history, wonderfully talented musicians, great Ulster Scots speakers etc. We have a number of great exponents of the Ulster Scots Language and seasoned poets & story-tellers a couple of whom are pictured below - Mr Willie Cromie and Mr Willie McAvoy.

Both men have brought the Ulster Scots Language to life made it fun, interesting and accessible to many including folk like me. I am not an Ulster Scots speaker - I do enjoy a good yarn or poem and I do feel that there is a place for the language in everything that we in Loughries do, summer schools, festivals, musical night, Burns suppers, etc. Loughries are fortunate, that we have some great friends and contacts - that can deliver high quality authentic Ulster Scots material.

Gettysburg Civil War (1863) History Channel Trailer

On Sunday 25th September 2011 - The History Channel will begin showing 'Gettysburg' a new documentary type film, telling the story of the famous battle during the American Civil War. This is not the end of the Civil War, however it is the beginning of the War for the Confederates, sadly.

Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott - two brilliant film makers show all the horror of war.

Here is a very short introduction - For the 150^th anniversary of America’s deadliest war, Ridley Scott and his brother Tony are teaming up with the History Channel to produce Gettysburg, a new feature documentary which reinvents how we look at the historic battle. In the four years of conflict between the Union and Confederate armies, over 600,000 American lives were lost. So it’s quite fitting that the Gettysburg is being described as “a visceral, terrifying experience.”

This is a must for all American Civil War enthusiasts - I will be glued to the programme. It is available now on YouTube - but I prefer to wait until it is shown on HD - well I may have a sneak preview!!

The harmonica is a great folk instrument - its sets the tone for this great song.

Green, Blue And Grey (Gray)

I was in Eason's (book-store) in Bangor the other day and came across this book - Green, Blue and Grey The Irish in the American Civil War.

I have read around 6 chapters so far and to be fair it is a good read, obviously telling the story of 'The Irish' during the civil war from a green perspective.

I will let you know my full thoughts when I have completed the book - so far it has held my attention, however I have the 916 page History of Ulster to finish, so if I loose my way - it is back to my Ulster story again.

When the war started the Irish Volunteers were the first unit in South Carolina to volunteer for service. The most famous Irish unit in the Federal army, the Irish Brigade, which included the famous Fighting 69th , was formed in 1861 at the instigation of Thomas Francis Meagher from Waterford, who rose to Brigadier General and commanded the Brigade.

The heroics of this brigade at Antietam, and elsewhere, became an important part of Irish American history. Many Irish made the supreme sacrifice in Union blue and Confederate grey, including Patrick Cleburne from Cork. He proved himself a capable commander on the Confederate side and earned the nom de guerre Stonewall of the West , counties are named after him in Alabama and Arkansas while a lake and city bear his name in Texas.

At Fredericksburg Irishmen killed Irishmen on soil which may have raised corn for famine relief in Ireland. At Gettysburg, where green and orange prayed and fought together, Colonel Patrick Kelly from Galway commanded the Irish Brigade. This is a story of bravery and courage, savagery and death.

Ards Peninsula From The Air - Part 1

For my birthday a while ago – Mrs A and my family presented me with a pleasure flight around the Ards Peninsula - folks from overseas may not be aware, but Newtownards has its own Private Airport.

We were very fortunate with the day we picked – it was clear, cold, dry, sunny and most importantly for a small aeroplane no wind!

An added bonus for me was that the pilot who took us up on the day was an old school class friend of mine Mark McMeekin – from the famous ‘milkmen family’ from Ards.

Mark took controls for the takeoff and landing - lucky old me, I took the controls of the plane for the rest of the flight – fantastic experience!

Long before I got some sense - my Dad always argued that I never quite grew up nor had any sense ever - that aside, here is one of my favourite tunes from a while back.

My taste in music has changed almost unrecognisably in the last 15 years, however it is always good to look back - recently I noticed there was a message in the song that I missed for many years, there is a line where he sings 'and the fifer calling you to join him' ;-) !!

Harvest 2011

On Sunday afternoon I harvested my beetroot - excellent crop this year. I managed to pickle 5 large jars of beetroot, some gifts - the rest for us over the winter months.

This beetroot was my biggest yet, it was massive and still in one piece, as I am unsure how to cook one so big, maybe boil it slowly - I steamed the other beetroot before peeling and putting into jars before adding the Anderson secret pickling recipe!!

European Heritage Open Days 2011

Folks, this weekend is the annual European Heritage Open Days. On Saturday and Sunday of this coming weekend many of our well known and perhaps lesser known buildings are open to the general public.

The last few years we visited the Old Priory, Windmill at Millisle, the Abbey in Greyabbey, Scrabo Tower, Helen's Tower to name but a few - not sure where we are visiting this weekend, maybe Rosemount House in Greyabbey might be worth a trip!

Ulster-Scots 'A Forenoon Aroon the Ards' Part 2

Last year Loughries Historical Society organised an event (amongst many events) 'A Forenoon Aroon the Ards'. The trip concentrated on the top half of the Ards Peninsula - Greyabbey, Carrowdore, Millisle, Donaghadee and Newtownards.

This time (Saturday 1st October 2011 0845am to 1.00pm) - we intend to tour the bottom half of the Ards Peninsula Greyabbey, turning right to Kircubbin, Portaferry, Kearney, Cloughey, Portavogie, Ballyhalbert and Ballywalter.

Our tour guide once again is Mr. Mark Thompson with coach driver Dessie Mitchell (Comfi Coaches)

The plans are at an advanced stage - we have 23 of the 28 seats sold, great interest once again.

Slieve Donard - My Personal Challenge 3

Well' on Saturday morning, Matthew and I set off for Donard Park, Newcastle, Co. Down - we arrived 9.20am and prepared for the hike!

We set off at 9.25am, as per map and instructions, through Donard Park, along the river bank and up into the 'Saddle' between Slieve Donard and Commedagh. It was slow going as the terrain was quite difficult underfoot, eventually we reached the Mourne Wall at the top of the 'Saddle'. After a brief rest bite, it was up Slieve Donard along the Mourne Wall - this was very, very steep and quite arduous, however we made it to the summit at 1205!

The cloud cover was low, however every few minutes the clouds would blow past and leave some breath taking views - magnificent!

Matthew and I took quite a few photo's, sadly something must have happened -as the camera memory only saved 12 photo's (I will try to find the others) so only a few snaps to prove we made it.

It is always great to fulfil a personal challenge - Matthew (my son) is only 10 - climbed to the summit with me, I am so proud of him!!.

The decent was as difficult as the ascent, it took a whole 2 hours 40 minutes to return to the car park - in all a 5 1/2 hour hike with a 20 minute break at the top.

More photo's later, maybe - and yes we slept well on Saturday night and we are very stiff this morning.

Well, time has come for my walk up to Slieve Donard.

Matthew, my 10 year old son and me intend to travel to Newcastle on Saturday morning to climb Slieve Donard, providing of course the weather is clement.

Sadly and with regret the other Matthew took cold feet!!!

Grow Your Own Vegetables

Over recent years I have developed ‘green finger’ and spent some time growing my own vegetables. It has taken a while, but finally I have grown a bumper crop of carrots. The boy’s and I harvested some of the carrots and a few onions this morning for Sunday lunch.

The colour and aroma of the freshly picked vegetables is fantastic, something the shop vegetables seen to lack – let’s hope they taste as good as they look and smell.

Confederate Song - Battle of Pea Ridge

Death and or glory on the battlefield where many a hero fell - not great day for the Confederate Army into the second year of the civil war.

The Battle of Pea Ridge (also known as Elkhorn Tavern) was a land battle of the American Civil War, fought on March 6–8, 1862, at Pea Ridge in northwest Arkansas, near Garfield.

In the battle, Union forces led by Brig. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis defeated Confederate troops under Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn.

The outcome of the battle essentially cemented Union control of Missouri. The battle was one of the few during the war in which a Confederate army outnumbered its Union opponent.

For all you fiddle players and lovers of all good music - Hector the Hero.

Hector the Hero is a classic lament written by Scottish composer and fiddle player James Scott Skinner in 1903 - it was written as a tribute to Major-General Hector MacDonald, a distinguished Scottish General, at the turn of the 20th Century.

Hector MacDonald was a close friend of Skinner and had committed suicide amid allegations of homosexuality - the tune is a lament, played slowly and sadly using fiddle, flute or bagpipes.

Politics is not really my thing, I do occasionally keep tabs on matters that interest me - this was one of those occasions that interested me.

On Wednesday afternoon, on the BBC Parliament programme, I watched Lord Norton (Conservative Peer) give a great talk 'The Centenary Lecture' on the life of J. Enoch Powell.

It was wonderful to hear in great detail - although squeezed into a 1 hour presentation, the life of one of the most famous and controversial British Politicians of the 20th Century.

Famed for his 'Rivers of Blood' speech in the 1970's he was subsequently made a villain by the English tabloid press because of it, nevertheless, Enoch Powell was a fascinating character of high intellect and a committed Unionist.

Many interesting facts were revealed, including one - Enoch held a deep mistrust of the Americans, who he felt, were the greatest threat to his beloved British Empire – I share that view!

Royal Black Institution - Black Day

For me the Royal Black Institution is the better of the Protestant Institutions.

I have been a member of the 'The Black' for almost 30 years now and have enjoyed all my time with in this wonderful organisation. I was a member of RBP 799, when I first joined the Institution back in 1982. I stayed in this Preceptory for around 5 years, before I transferred to my fathers Preceptory, Ards Chosen Few RBP 290 - and have remained an active member since.

In 1999, I was elected Deputy Master (100th anniversary of the Preceptory) and then elected Worshipful Master in 2000 / 2001 - following that, I was elected Registrar (secretary) and have served in that office since.

In 2007/8 I was elected Deputy District Master of Newtownards Royal Black District Chapter, then in 2008/9 I was Elected District Master serving for 1 year. I now hold office as Assistant District Treasurer and County Committee member and now I believe Assistant County Marshall.

I joined the Institution to serve not to be served, so I am happy and willing to help where needed. I am not one to look for accolades or self promotion, I quietly get on with my job / role and do so to the very best of my ability.

Looking forward to Newry on Saturday 27th August 2011.

Ulster Scots Summer School 2011b

Loughries 5th Annual Ulster Scots Summer School took place in July 2001 - for 1 week, at Castle Gardens Primary School Newtownards.

Once again it was a great success - 60 children per day enjoyed great weather and a fun packed week of activities and workshops - these included football, archery, craft, cookery, dance, music, day trip to Folk Museum, Ulster Scots Highland Games, history, language and so much more!

As you will see from the photo's below the children had great fun exploring their Ulster Scots culture and traditions.

We are fortunate to have such wonderful, dedicated staff who go the extra wee bit to make the summer school a great success.

Loughries Mini Ulster Scots Festival 2011 - Broken String Band

On Friday 14th October 2011, the Broken String Band will be 'Unplugged' as part of Loughries Mini Ulster Scots Festival. They will be appearing in the Londonderry Rooms, Town Hall Newtownards, 8pm to 1130pm with a short interlude around 915pm.

Believe it or not 60 tickets have already been sold, which leaves 20 or so left - if you are interested in going drop me a line, or call at reception at the Town Hall - time is running out!!

Here is a snippet of what you can expect - The Broken String Band playing at the Maiden City Festival, Londonderry a year or so ago - they are fantastic musicians and a great night out!

Well folks, I have been back on my tin whistle again, after a several weeks without a tune - here is a beautiful tune I have blogged before and love playing - Lorena.

On this video there are some fantastic photos from American Civil War - battlefields, guns, regiments, sweethearts, graves - oh the futility of war!

In some of the schools where I teach the whistle - I encourage the children to learn this tune (slow version). I tell them the story of the tune, all the sadness of the soldiers leaving their sweethearts behind and why the song was banned by the Generals on both sides, because so many soldiers were running off home to their loved ones.

They are all so very quiet! but it soon becomes a firm favourite with them - oh yes and me!

Breakfast Club Invite

I don't normally receive invitations to speak at events, however a friend Eric Morrison invited me to Carnalea Methodist Church Breakfast Club, on Saturday 8th October 2011.

This group have a guest speaker once per month, to talk on different subjects, Eric wants my talk on my work, Ulster Scots, the Orange Institution, lambeg drum. I am giving a great deal of thought as to how to pitch the talk - probably factual based would be the best route.

The talk is to last around 20 minutes, allowing time for a question and answer session at the end and Eric suggest I prepare to be challenged - well I am happy and confident in my identity so I won't be daunted explaining my views. Well, if people ask you a probing question they should not be surprised by an honest forthright answer!

Pilot Ulster Scots Residential Summer School - 2011 - B

Loughries Ulster Scots summer school has been going for 5 years, yes 5 years - it is hard to believe that we have been going so long. We only consider children from p1 to p7 as the summer school is held at Castle Gardens Primary School.

I will be doing a separate post on the summer school in the coming day's.

This year the Ulster Scots Agency decided to pilot a residential Ulster Scots summer school, aimed at the next age group 11 to 14. Loughries applied to pilot the residential - we were successful and plans were made.

Greenhill YMCA Donard Park Newcastle was the venue for what turned out to be a fantastic adventure. On the trip were 18 very excited children and 3 equally excited leaders, Heather Hutchinson, Carolyn Saunderson and me!

Not to go into too much detail, however I hope you can see by the photo's attached that we had a wonderful trip. Activities included zip line, climbing wall, bouldering, campfire cookery, Scottish and Highland country dance workshop, language and history workshop, music and singing around the campfire and some of the children played.....yes, lets stay up all night!!

It was a great trip and one we may plan for in 2012, I have to say that the children were fantastically well behaved and really had a great time - as coordinator of the trip, I must pay tribute to Heather and Carolyn for making the trip so very special for everyone!

Nice Weather For It

Well, on a cold, wet and windy Friday in August - what would be more fun than crab fishing, off Bangor Pier!!

Yes, we all ventured down to the pier and during some awful rain showers and gusty conditions, we had a great afternoon's fun with a 3 crab lines and a few bits of bacon.

In all we caught 21 crabs - and a few feet of seaweed in 2 hours.

Slieve Donard - My Personal Challenge

I have a few 'secret' things I would like to do/achieve - most are just pipe dreams, however I hope to realise one of these pipe dreams later this month.

Well, I plan to hike/climb Slieve Donard! Yes, later this month Matthew Warwick and I have arranged to meet up and climb the highest Mountain in Northern Ireland.

Now those who know me will be aware that my job is like scaling Slieve Donard daily, that aside it has always been an ambition of mine - really just to say 'I did it'.

I started training yesterday 6 miles walked and 6 miles walked this morning, I plan to walk Scrabo on Saturday and continue to exercise by walking up to 8 miles per day in order to build up some level of fitness before I attempt this walk.

I am an asthmatic and I hope that this will not affect my walk - I will have to wait and see how it goes - wish me luck!!

I have been quite busy recently with our normal summer school - last week, now I focus my attention to our new venture, Pilot Residential Summer School at Greenhill YMCA, Newcastle, Co. Down.

Tuesday morning until Wednesday evening, 18 children and 3 leaders will have 2 fun packed day's, enjoying - archery, climbing wall, bouldering, zip wire, dance, music, cookery, language and history project.

Plenty to do and get involved with - report later.

Ulster Scots Summer School 2011

Today Monday 25th July starts Loughries Ulster Scots Summer School at Castle Gardens Primary School, Bowtown Road, Newtownards.

This eagerly awaited event has been meticulously planned over the last few months, now thankfully it is here. This is the 5th year of the summer school, each year we build on the success from the previous year, then make subtle changes to the programme of events.

This year we have included more outdoor activities like football coaching (Bobby Murphy) Archery, golf and we intend to finish with out Ulster Scots Highland Games event. This is along with the usual Ulster Scots music, cookery, crafts, history, language, etc. etc.

Once again we have a waiting list 0f over a dozen children as our 60 allocated places were filled almost immediately.

Saturday 23rd July 2011 in between shopping, babysitting and Harry Potter at the Cinema - I managed to visit the North Down Pipe Band Championships.

A huge crowd turned out to watch the bands and be part of a wonderful day.

Ulster is bless with so many diverse musical traditions - the pipe band tradition being one of the oldest and best established.

Scrabo Walk

Today I parked my van at Mum’s – Greenwell Street N’ Ards and walked to Scrabo Tower and back!

Well many years ago when I attended Victoria Primary School we used to take part in ‘The Scrabo Run’ annually, there was also a ‘Scrabo Walk’ at that time. Everyone that took part met at the square and either ran or walked up to Scrabo Tower then ran back! It was a great event at which many, many folk took part.

Well, 30 years on, my running days left firmly in the past I decided to walk – with my trusted mutt Dudley. The route I choose was Greenwell Street, Londonderry Park, New Road, and Scrabo Road, straight up the Scrabo Hill face to the Tower – this took 55 minutes and boy when I got to the top was I out of breath, I had forgotten how steep the hill was! – Then 5 minute break.

Return walk round by the Quarry Face to the Scrabo Road, across 2 fields to Ards Rugby Grounds, across to Ards Allotments, then on to the Strangford Lough shore front, back to Londonderry Park to Greenwell Street – which took me 1hr 30 minutes.

Fantastic walk ‘in touch with nature’ type walk very enjoyable and relaxing.
